One of my favorite games was a
Rolemaster game. We were all 2nd level or so, but with a mixture of careful hiring of high level NPCs and complete BS we convinced an entire city that we were very, very tough. We owned a bar, and ran a mercenary group. We would go on missions that we were up to, but generally we caroused. One of the rules of our bar was that the first drink was free for anyone new who came in. It was a way to meet people, and an easy way to bring new characters into the game. Those who joined the game became full members of our organization. This worked well with one exception. This guy decided that he wanted come play with us. He worked up a character and the session started. He came into the bar, and we bought him a drink. He immediately started into this hissy fit about how he didn't need our charity, and stomped out of the bar. He told the GM that he wanted to go to the toughest bar in town. He didn't last with the group.
