Duckon, the extended dance mix version
Considering the weekend, there is nothing wrong with me at the moment that 18-20 hours of uninterrupted sleep wouldn't cure.

I'd better cut this, it could take awhile )

Now that was fun
Nice Guys
Only Coffee House In Town
Wilderness Of Smiles
Cat’s Eye (Howard Ashby Kranz)
Ghosts
Low Self Esteem ...
In Crosby Park
Color Of Your Eyes
Trophy Wife
The Woman I Want
Hides

That was a fun show. Andy and I came together amazingly. We haven't done this in a long time, and it was like we had actually practiced or something.

The Feng Shui Ninjas were marvelous ... we will do this again.

Coffee Grounds in the Twin Cities Friday night
Yup, an actual show with me doing my songs tomorrow night, Friday the 22nd at The Coffee Grounds opening for The Feng Shui Ninjas.

This will be an Eric & Andy show and those are always my best shows, cause he makes me play more songs and talk less. I even wrote out a set list ... emailed it to him even, I promise that I will even stick to it ... really.

So come out and see what may be my only show without that bunch of reprobates bunch of very nice guys who I play with, for the rest of this year.

The website (which still doesn't mention me, but I'm not bitter) says that the show is at 8 ... but ... avoid the crowds, show up early. And be warned, the entire WSPA will be in attendance, so things may get ugly.

Set lists and such
It was indeed the Eric & Andy show ... and a GREAT Eric & Andy show. A kind of tepid response from the audience, except for the gerbil who talked all the way through the friggin show. If you want to talk, go outside.

Only Coffee House In Town
Ghosts
Wilderness Of Smiles
Need
Trophy Wife
The Woman I Want
Color Of Your Eyes
How Can I Miss You?
Dancer (first perfomance, BOY does it need work)
Roman Wall Blues
Hides

I did Pine City Motel Blues at the circle later, and then Hides again with Andy, Nate and various other folks. Chas said that he was worried when we started it, but that it ended up ... what did he say ... something about a tribal rhythmic thing ... yeah ... that's what it was.

I'll talk more about the con and the other folks who played and such later. Now I have to get caught up at work.

The weekend
Recording was amazing. It looks like we have good takes on Only Coffee House In Town, Need, Wilderness Of Smiles, Perfect Moments and In Crosby Park. That is nearly half the record. [info]aaanda and [info]freeimprov were both on the top of their game. The four of us had a great time and got a lot done, including takes on two of Isaac's songs ([info]freeimprov's lap steel work will just break your heart).

Now if Isaac and I can get the rest done, it should be out by Con On The Cob if not before

The weekend so far
Just a quick update, then time to crash out for the night

Rehearsal with [info]aaanda and [info]freeimprov went very well. Isaac and I decided to dump one song from the CD, since it fits in better with the newer songs I am writing for the next CD. So we have 4 of my songs and 2 of Isaac's to record tomorrow, and we want to get on the road by 2. It's gonna be tight.

Went to see Lojo tonight at a place in St Louis Park. As always she was amazing, and Isaac is now a big fan. Now off to bed, more monday once I am back home.

So, how has your weekend been going ???

This weekend
I will be in the Twin Cities recording with [info]aaanda and [info]freeimprov. The Tillies thing is not going to work, just not enough warning to get people there. BUT ... we will be around all weekend with some free time (especially saturday afternoon and evening) so if anyone wants to do anything email me at ericccoleman at gmail dot com.

My thought is, I may do dinner at Everest saturday evening.

Hope to see some folks ...

I have a question
If Andy and I were to be recording live at Tillies in Minneapolis sunday morning around 11am, would ya show up to cheer us on? This is for the next record. I know it is short notice, but that is the way my life is going at the moment.

The show
I had no voice, which is not unusual ... ok, even less voice than I normally have, but Andy dragged me along.

Nice Guys
The Woman I Want
Color Of Your Eyes
Pine City Motel Blues
In Crosby Park

At this point Andy made a comment about Standards ... Looking at the set list I said that we weren't doing Standards ... just living proof that Andy can read, and I can't. He later said that I ruined a good pun, so consider it a public service on my part.

Wilderness Of Smiles
Trophy Wife
Standards (since I finally realized that it was in the set list)
Don't Go Home (on the 12 string)
How Can I Miss You?
Hides

THe highlights for me ...

Andy's playing lit up Don't Go Home. I had several people say how good it was ... and it felt ever better onstage.

Later last night was the premiere of a new band.

[info]gundo, [info]anach, [info]mike46 and I have banded together to do ... well ... bad things. Filk in a rock band context. The name of the band is Toyboat and we describe ourselves as Filk Gone Horribly Right. Last night we did

The Lady - TTO - Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald
&
The Mary O'Meara Blues

There are more songs planned, and we will be adding to the repetoire as time goes along, I'm hoping on being ready to play by Cap, since I won't be at Windy. It was rough last night, but if we can do that well without really all practicing together at the same time, I shudder to think what will happen once we do.

I took some of my gear to the car, went up to get my acoustic and came back down for one more song.

Hides started slow and quiet, but somewhere in the middle Andy took over and it turned into the edgiest version we have ever done. It was wonderful.

Even with my health being a little wonky, I had a marvelous weekend. Now I need to go load out and catch some more music, and get to my last panel.

How was your weekend?

Saturday - 4pm - Conf C Religious Wars: Electronic vs tabletop gaming
Saturday - 8pm - Conf C Hey! You got dementia in my filk!
Sunday - 12noon - Conf B Virtual Communities

And as I said, Andy will be playing with me. I have no idea as to the format of the concert, but from what I know about Steve, it should be a lot of fun.

This evening
Thank you everyone who came out this evening ... it was a blast. I will post set lists later in the weekend ... but I do want to say a special thank you to Andy Anda for showing up and making the evening so much more fun. My shows are always better when shared with Andy.

Night all ... seeya tomorrow

Oddly enough
Under most circumstances I would consider [info]polyfrog to be one of the most truthful people I know ... more in his LJ

Last night was a blast. Steve Mac was his usual brilliant self. Probably the best show vocally I have ever seen him do. He didn't do Dutchman, but I can live with that just this once. His improvs were the hit of the evening. Ren gigs have really sent him to a whole new level. I wish I could make it to a faire he was at, I'd love to see him work that sort of a crowd.

The song circle was a blast (although not as much as the ride home). I can never remember the name of the WI filker who uses all the midi backings. But it is always a nice thing to have him in the circle. That way I am guaranteed to not be the most twisted person there. We left to the sound of his LOTR song.

I only got in two songs, mostly because we needed to get back to the aformentioned Polyfrog's house and collapse. Did Ghosts and Hides. Andy was in town so ... well ... and then [info]decadentdave got into the act.

Sometimes it's tricky playing with other people. Last night was especially tricky since I wanted to stop and just listen to him play guitar.

I have to go hunt and kill food, and then we need to get on the road soon. More later.

A quick tangent
I have to say how touching it is when the best musician I know questions about whether what he was playing was appropriate during a song. [info]markiv1111, I have never known you to do anything that is not appropriate. I have known a lot of players with a lot of chops, some (and very few) with even more than you. But beyond that, what you have is the ability to listen, and to find what is appropriate. Knowing you makes me a better musician. Playing with you is a priviledge. There are a few musicians who I know I can trust completely when I am playing. I got to play with two of them during Hides last night. Andy and I have played Hides a lot together. Every time is an incredible experience. Sharing that with you, and you sharing your talent, is wonderful. Thank you.

Obviously Hides went well. I wrote this while writing the last message, but it didn't seem appropriate in that message. But it certainly had to be said.

Some updates
I am now officially a finalist in the Highway 61 Folks Festival songwriting contest. I am the ONLY person in the contest every of it's 5 years.

I just finished about 90% of one of the songs that I will be doing in the contest. I think it's gonna be just darn funny. I have another new song that I hope to have done by that point, we'll see.

The Duckon show will be with Andy Anda on fiddle. The shows that Andy and I play together are always really special and this is the first time we have had a chance to do this at a Chicago con. [info]janmagic has asked that the show be all serious songs. I am so looking forward to this. No one ever asks for my serious stuff.

More later.
