I knew I forgot someone
I didn't thank the ever wonderful [info]chia_rhino (still one of the coolest names on LJ) for watching the merch table. Poor woman, forced to listen to music all day (especially those clowns who went on at 5).

Everything balanced till I got my hands on it, and in 10 minutes of sales I managed to not check off several items sold ... SHE did it right ALL DAY.

Ka Klick live at Demicon AND Second Life
While I am thinking about this, for you Second Life folks, Ka Klick and his band will be broadcasting live from Demicon ... providing we get the tech worked out ... like I said it was an insane setup this morning.

Demicon, so far
Last nights show was fun. I chased out the folks who hadn't seen me before (why does this guy keep talking? In the middle of songs even?) but the folks who stayed were a little more used to me. Being heckled by Adam Stemple and Lojo Russo always makes for ... well ... it was only a little brutal. This after sitting at the restaurant next door listening to them ... I don't know how many of you may have met them, but they're bad bad people.

Let's see if I can remember what I played

Hey Dad
Trophy Wife
Bang My Bald Spot
Jordan Cochrane
How Can I Miss You?
edit Only Coffee House In Town (with [info]mike46 on lead guitar, thank you [info]gamerchick for remembering this one
Dancer/Hides

Geeze, did I only manage 8 songs? That may be a new record for me in an hour show. I'll ask around and see if there was anything I missed. (and indeed there was)

[info]gamerchick just told me that Hey Dad went on for 17 minutes. That is indeed the new record, beating the old record of 12 minutes by way too big of a margin.

There was a simply too insane of a setup this morning, but everything works. There will be three bands in a row at the end of the afternoon. It's gonna be nuts.

The Flatland Ramblers are on now, and I forget every year how much I love their music. I need to get out to see them other times, since they are local to me.

More as the day goes along.

Last night
Luke's show was great last night. I struggled with the sound a bit, but got things running right. I did have an ITunes crash, the first time it has ever happened ... Sorry Luke.

The circle after was amazing. It was Bryan, Beth, Gundo, Jason and a guy who I met last year, but typical of me I never remember his name. We played for a bit, then Adam and Lojo invaded.

The circle was a blast, there was much silliness, much seriousness and GREAT music ... I finally rolled into bed around 3 am. Fortunately the drive home is only 40 minutes. So I am collapsing in a matter of moments.

Thank you everyone who made the music so great this year. I already have big plans for next year, since it's Demicon 20. Most announcements on that as time goes along.

Hey, get off my lawn
I got everything ready for the shows this weekend ... except ...

That ever pesky set list for MY show

So I winged it.

Let's see if I can remember what I played

Trophy Wife
Pine City Motel Blues
Bang My Bald Spot
Color Of Your Eyes
Almost Beautiful
J's Wild Appalachian Stomp
WYSIWYG
How Can I Miss You? (the Readers Digest condensened version)
Hey Dad !!!
Hides

I think that's it, there might have been one more in there somewhere

It was one of the most fun shows in ages. The audience was fun to play with, I only spaced on lyrics on a couple of songs ... and most of the folks from the music track were there.

Now I must collapse, it's been a long hard day.

Show updates
I am playing in Ames this Tuesday at 8 at the Ames Progressive office

I'm playing at Capricon February 15 - 5pm in the internet cafe, as well as running Radio Capricon all weekend. More information on that soon.

I am a part of The Marscon Dementia Track - February 29 - March 2. I'm playing friday night, which means you get to hear a couple of songs that I usually don't do at cons ... be afraid, this is going to be a more ... well ... let's just say that I am dipping back into my roots a little bit

I will be at Conestoga July 25-27. According to their recent new release I am playing friday night and saturday afternoon. The other musician verified is Bland Lemon Denton, (he's the guy who wrote Buddy Holly is Alive and Well and Living on Ganamede a very silly book that I dearly love).

And of course ... The Toyboat 2008 (we'll have a name for it soon) Tour

Toyboat Shows
Demicon - May 2-4
Duckon - June 13-15
Archon - October 3-5

A couple of quick comments on the weekend
Toyboat practice was amazing. We got through everything in pretty good shape, and got a couple of new-ish songs arranged. We work so fast now. Their practicing a lot together has gotten them used to each other, and makes it easy for me to step in when I can get there. And this is the least ego-driven band I have ever heard of. We are all on the same page completely. It's truly a band. We will be hanging out some in the filk room at Capricon, and at least a couple of us will be going to Filk Ontario. Then it is on to Demicon, Duckon, and now that we have talked about it as a band, Archon is official (there was a little bit of doubt due to a possible conflict)

[info]exapno's party was very pleasant, but we seem to have missed out on the music ... why was that Xap ??? There was some music, much conversation, much telling of stories and much fun. The Xaplings had no idea I was going to be there, so X1 did much yelling when he answered the door.

Sunday we had lunch with [info]polyfrog & [info]mairzydotes at Pita Inn, yeah. that's a shock I know. We then went back to Chez Dork to get my laptop and the Squirrel's CD player and headed back to Iowa.

It was a marvelous weekend.

A quick update
Thursday night was the open mike at Penguins Comedy Club in Cedar Rapids. I got 4 minutes. I didn't have my guitar cord. So I just got up there, set the mike aside and sang How Can I Miss You?. It went well, but I think that the booker there didn't realize that all I do is songs.

This weekend I have been at Demicon here in Des Moines. Im sitting in the back of the music room listening to Orckes And Trolles and Knotty Dog play. It' a good time.

The show friday night was a 2 1/2 hour marathon with Susan Urban and Sandy Andina. Talk about serious fun. We are talking about doing some more shows together. The idea seems to be Minneapolis in the next couple of months, so all you up there be very afraid.

I don't have a set list at the moment, but there is a recording that I am going to remaster after Mahtowa and the CD is done, as well as recordings from the last couple of years. A lot of work, but it should be a great time.

So, a 2 1/2 hour show friday night, I then sat and played songs for folks for an hour or so after that [info]appleboy was the only other person who did song, I had never heard him sing ... what a gorgeous voice.

It was a great time. I ended up staying at [info]guppiecat's house friday night.

There were panels saturday, all with Susan and Sandy. More fun. We had a small circle last night. It ran down pretty early and I headed back home to sleep in my own bed around 12:30. It's been a great couple of days.

Mahtowa next weekend.

I should talk about this
Since it's this weekend.

I am at Demicon in Des Moines.

Friday Night at 9 (I think, check your program) I am onstage with Sass, that being the wonderful duo of Susan Urban and Sandy Andina. We have a 2 hour slot and have not discussed exactly what we are doing with it yet. It may be the three of us standing up there and cracking ourselves up, or we may do two shows, theirs and mine. Either way it will be fun.

The following weekend I am in Mahtowa MN for the Highway 61 Folks Festival. I am in the songwriting contest on saturday and hosting the open mike on sunday. My friend Isaac is going as well and we are working on some songs to do together tonight.

It is, as always, the best day of music I see all year. Come on up.

Demicon In Des Moines IA April 30
I just posted this to rec.music.filk.

This is a little con that has big ambitions. The music guy, Josh, started a
music track last year and this year it has exploded.

Some bits from their music page

This year we have a special treat for you. Taking advantage of having Emma Bull
as a guest, we will have a concert Saturday evening in the Grand Ball Room,
following the Masquerade judging. We proudly announce an amalgam concert
featuring Emma Bull, Lojo Russo, Adam Stemple, Lorraine Garland, Trevor
Hartman, and Paul Score. You may recognize their names from the bands Cats
Laughing, The Flash Girls, Folk Underground, Funks Grove, Boiled in Lead, Tim
Malloys as well as Lojo Russo's solo touring. So be sure to come for two and a
half hours of the astounding mix of this concert.

But wait, there's more

Confirmed musicians:
Flash Girls (Folk/Rock)
Lojo Russo (Folk/Rock)
Folk Underground (Folk/Rock)
Dave Clement (Folk / Filk)
Eric Coleman (Original Rock)
Flatland Ramblers (Celtic)
Orckes and Trolls (Madcap Folk)
Sandy Andina (Original Folk)
ATROPHY (Hard Rock)
Knotty Dog (Celtic / Folk)
Riverfolk (Original Folk / Filk)
Nate and Louie Bucklin (Original Folk / Filk)
Mother Beat (An All-Womyn Rhythm Circle)
Nancy Louise Freeman (Southwestern Folk, Filk, and Blues)

Rumor has it that there is going to be an attempt to get a monthly music circle
going in Des moines. FINALLY music is getting going here in central Iowa.

(I get to see Dave Clement do an entire show !!! I get to hear Nate bitch about
my voice !!! I get to hang with my favorite blue haired goddes !!! I get to get
my books signed by Emma Bull !!! I even get to do my own show)

Songs etc
Man ... what a weekend ... WHAT a weekend ... I did two shows ... I have no idea exactly what order I played songs ... since the two shows were quite different ... so ... I made up a set list of songs to choose from ... here is the list ... and comments

J's Wild Appalachian Stomp
opened the first weekend with this ... got the audience's attention (not that I needed to ... Con crowds go into a music room to LISTEN to music)
WYSIWYG
Both nights ... opened the 2nd night with it ... great response both times ...
Bang My Bald Spot
I think I did it the first night only ... there is a comfort level with this song now that seems to put it in the middle of the set now ...
The Things You Never Know
Both nights again ... this is in the A list now ...
Product Might Be Hot
Just the first night ...
Hand Above The Water
the 2nd night ... a really nice version
The One I Chased Away
just the first night .. I think ...
In Crosby Park
both nights ...
Almost Beautiful
2nd night ... maybe the first ... whenever I did it ... it went well
Trophy Wife
both nights ... AND the music jam saturday night ... from not doing it for some time ... this has become an A list song again
Roman Wall Blues & Hides
I melded these two both shows ... I broke a string during Hides the 2nd night ... bummer ... the Takimine goes wildly out of tune when you break a string ... so the song kinda ended ... I did it again during the Jam though ... I think I talked about that already
Golden Age Of Silicon
the music coordinator asked me to play it ... so .. being an idgit I played it when he wasn't in the room ... what a gerbil I am ...
Oh Shannon
both nights ... got a great response ... although the llama joke got a few odd looks ... it's a little brutal I suppose ...
Color Of Your Eyes
just the first night ... I still need to rework the chorus ...
Low Self Esteem ...
Both nights ... closing song ...
Crank Generation
I pulled it out the 2nd night ... a better response than I expected ... it's a brutal song ... a guy knew the story about the guy stealing the ingredients ... so he was READY to laugh ...

The jam was fun ... I played some lead on other folks songs ... when I was doing it well I played a little louder ... when I wasn't ... well ...

I couldnt make up my mind what to play ... so Lojo just opened my book ... and we all did a KILLER version of Richard Thompson's How Will I Ever Be Simple Again

a great weekend ...

Current Mood: ecstatic

Demicon
I'll post approximate set lists later ... since I am pretty brain dead ... and I didnt follow my list ... and played two very different shows the two nights ...

I played at the Demicon Science Fiction Convention this weekend ... two shows and a late night jam session saturday .. the audiences were exceptional ... my thanks to Josh who ran things ... and special thanks to Lojo Russo (lojorusso.com) for tossing some nifty fills on Hides last night ... that is the one song that most folks WON'T try to do anything with when I play it ... and what she did was exceptional ...

PLUS ... her show as incredible ... smart ... tuneful ... frequently wildy funny ... then she'll turn around and tear your heart out ... my kind of a songwriter ...
