Kaolin is an edible clay -- it used to be one of the constituents of kaolin and morphine, medicine used for settling irritable digestion when I was a kid.

You can, actually, use it in cooking as well; if nothing else, one of Heston Blumenthal's cookery programs a little while ago used it when he was making an edible garden -- the rocks were tiny new potatoes coated in kaolin.

Ohh, interesting! I didn't know it was edible, for me it was simply the required component for porcelain.
